Eurostars Book Hotel stands on the corner of a street in central Munich, one of the main thoroughfares of the historic centre of the city around the Marienplatz, close to the central rail station. It is also close to the Theresienwiese, an area where many outdoor events take place, such as the world-famous annual Oktoberfest.
The name of the hotel, Book, is a reference to the facade, made up of white leaves that shelter the windows of the bedrooms. Taken together they suggest a disorderly but harmonious flicking through of the pages of a book. The choice of “black on white” as applied colours, via a range of shades of grey, strengthens the leitmotiv of writing.
The plinth is formed by the ground floor and the cornice by the top floor of the building, both of which are black in colour and so are distinguished chromatically from the white central body, as well as by the difference in the sizes of the openings in the outer skin. The central body, which contains the bedrooms, is distinguished by striking projecting features by way of awnings, that resemble the pages of a book.
The interior design pays special attention to circulation within the Hotel, achieved through a sequence of bi-tonal stripes in the flooring, resembling bar codes. The low-key passageways, flanked by white linear flashes along the dark walls, accompany the guest to the illuminated «open books», made up of a pair of adjacent entrances to bedrooms. Also, the walls of the passageways are decorated with texts of seven different literary genres, an identifying characteristic for each of the seven floors of the hotel. Book it!
